My 1982 Specialized Allez SE

Specialized Allez SE

Looking randomly on craigslist one day, I see a vintage Allez for sale, in the classic red with small white lettering. It said all Campagnolo parts, so I figured it might have been a 1984 Allez, their top of the line model which came with Nuovo Record and Super Record parts. Since the bike was in the City, I called the seller, went to the bank to get some cash, and and drove over in about an hour. I drive up and there is a short middle-aged Russian woman standing with this bike on the sidewalk. The bike was quite pristine, very clean with very few blemishes. She says it was her ex-boyfriends bike and that he rarely rode it. It was advertised as a 56cm frame, but after riding it for a few seconds, it was definitely a bit larger. I saw the "SE" decal on the top tube, which indicates the bike originally came with Suntour Superbe Pro components. It appears the owner had swapped out almost all of the original parts and replaced them with Campagnolo, but not with NR or SR, but with mostly C-Record.

At first impression, I was a little disappointed because the brakes looked like a much older design than everything else (I now realize they are highly desirable Colbato brakes, which replaced the problematic first generation Delta brakes in the C-Record gruppo). The rear derailleur was a mystery, I can't tell the difference between Chorus and Record of that period. The only remaining Suntour part was the downtube shifters, which was kind of odd, since it would have been one of the least expensive parts to replace. So the bike was a bit too large for me and had a mix of Campy components, but the condition was good and the price was extremely low, so I August 19, 2010, I brought this nice bike home with me. Now I need to figure out what to do with this thing...

10/2/2010 - replaced the Suntour shifters with some C-Record shifters that I bought on eBay. Now its complete.

10/14/2010 - sold the bike on eBay to a person in NY. Boxed it up and shipped it out this morning. Sold two bikes in one day, this and the Medici Pro-Strada.
